Obama joins millions in U.S. college basketball madness
Obama, appearing on the ESPN cable network to pick winners round by round, selected undefeated Kentucky to beat Villanova in the April 6 finals of the NCAA Tournament that begins in earnest on Thursday.
"I think Kentucky is going to take it," Obama told a Cleveland audience later in the day. "But, you know, I haven’t won since my first year in office. ... So I wouldn’t necessarily take my bracket and copy it, although I suspect I’m not the only person picking Kentucky."
The commander-in-chief leads legions in slacking off for "March Madness."
"We live in an age of distractions. There are many things that our employers have to fight in the workplace today but there's nothing that compares to the unique event that is March Madness," said Andy Challenger, vice president of business development at global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
U.S. companies will lose an estimated $1.9 billion in wages to employees being unproductive during work hours, he said, between researching, filling out brackets, organizing pools and watching games.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll this week showed 23 percent of Americans will fill out at least one bracket and of those, nearly 40 percent will bet more than $10.
In terms of Las Vegas betting, the NCAA tournament rivals the NFL's Super Bowl, which attracted $116 million in wagers for the New England Patriots' victory over the Seattle Seahawks in February.
"Whoever coined the phrase 'March Madness' got it correct," said Jay Kornegay, vice president of race and sports operations at the Westgate Las Vegas (Nevada) SuperBook.
Kornegay said unlike the Super Bowl, which attracts men and women equally in Las Vegas, NCAA Tournament bettors are "99 percent guys, period."
Former Florida governor Jeb Bush, a potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate, selected the University of Virginia to win. He drew some criticism on social media, with skeptics noting that Virginia is a darkhorse but the school is located in a state Bush likely needs to reach the Oval Office like his brother and father.

Radio Pakistan to launch Special Sports Programme for World Cup
Besides daily sports, the one hour weekly special programme will highlight various aspects of the Cricket World Cup.
The programme will be aired on every Saturday between 7 to 8 pm.

Ward-Prowse extends Saints stay
Born in Portsmouth, the home of Southampton’s bitter south coast rivals, the 20-year-old has been on Saints’ books since the age of eight and has made 77 first-team appearances in all competitions for the club since his senior debut in October 2011.
Now the England-Under 21 international is set to stay at Southampton, currently an impressive third in English football’s top flight, until 2020 at least.
“The club is in a fantastic position and ever since I joined the club at a young age I knew it was the right place to be,” Ward-Prowse told Southampton’s YouTube channel.
“I fell in love with the place straight away,” he added.
“I’ve been on a fantastic journey, the club has too, and it’s great to extend my stay.
I’m really excited for the next few years.”
Ward-Prowse has made 17 appearances for Southampton so far this season, despite being sidelined for a large part of the campaign with a broken foot.
However, he has featured in all 11 matches since returning last month and Saints manager Ronald Koeman was delighted by Ward-Prowse’s decision to extend his contract.
“He’s one of the young players who is developing himself in a very good way.
He will be a great player,” Koeman said.
“It’s always good news, I’m happy that he would like to stay with us.
It’s a good signal to the rest of the players,” the former Netherlands defender added.
“He’s one of the examples for the academy, to the confidence of the young players.
“‘Prowsey’ developed in the academy and now he’s one of the young players who plays for the first team.
“He’s a good professional, always serious in his training, in his discipline, he’s a big example for all young players.”

CBS says suspends CBS Sports analyst Greg Anthony after his arrest
"Greg Anthony will not be working again for CBS this season," the spokesperson said in an email.
Anthony, 47, was arrested Friday evening after making an agreement for sexual favors, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
His agent did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his arrest.
Anthony played 11 seasons in the National Basketball Association before joining CBS in 2008 as lead studio analyst for the network's college basketball coverage, according to his network biography.
He had been scheduled to work CBS' broadcast of the Michigan State-Maryland basketball game in College Park, Maryland, on Saturday.

Tennis: Nishikori, Verdasco score wind-blown Kooyong wins
Nishikori, ranked fifth in the world, was forced to work hard in swirling conditions at Kooyong Club for just over two hours.
“It was tough for both of us — like a little typhoon out there,” said the Tokyo-born player now based in Florida. “But it was a good match for me: three sets and some good tennis.”
The eight-man warm-up event for the Australian Open starting on Monday is considered prime preparation for the first major of the season.
“Conditions made it tough to play,” added the 25-year-old Nishikori.
“It was difficult for me to be aggressive. But I played a good tie-break and I’m happy to win today.”
Verdasco also took charge of his game as he was tested by the weather.
The 33rd-ranked Spaniard collected the first set against Simon in 27 minutes and thwarted the Frenchman as Simon served to level at a set each.
Instead, he was broken to love, with Verdasco eventually winning a tie-breaker on a concluding Simon backhand error.
“This wind is tough for everyone,” said the Spaniard. “You need to be focused and hit every ball with confidence — if not it flies everywhere.
“Despite the conditions, this is perfect preparation for the Open. I like the hot conditions but you never know here.”
Nishikori came to Kooyong after a semi-final last weekend in Brisbane, where he lost to Canadian Milos Raonic in three tie-break sets.
After winning the opening set thanks to a break in the first game, Nishikori’s level slipped as Australian world number 273 Thompson made his move in the second set, winning it via a break of serve in the fourth game.
The third set was halted for a short time due to a passing shower.
When the players returned Nishikori failed to serve out for victory at 5-3, the set eventually going to a tie-break after Thompson saved a match point in the 12th game.
Nishikori took his first match point in the tie-break as the Australian double-faulted.
Later matches see Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov against Serbian youngster Filip Krajinovic and another Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez versus Richard Gasquet of France.
