PTI stands disintegrated after civil disobedience call: Shahbaz Sharif

#GNN - #ISLAMABAD: #Punjab Chief Minister, Shahbaz Sharif Monday said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan’s demand for technocratic government followed by his call for a civil disobedience has created fissure in the PTI.

“Imran Khan has thrown himself in isolation by indulging in politics that is based on personal ego and stubbornness,” Shahbaz Sharif said in a statement issued here.

He said not even a single person supported Imran Khan’s announcement of civil disobedience. “The people of Pakistan can distinguish between what’s good for them and what’s not,” he added.

FLIR ONE Starts Pre-Orders For Its #iPhone #Thermal #Imaging Camera

#GNN - If you ever wanted to experience how the Predator sees the world, now’s your chance, and all you’ll need is an iPhone and the FLIR ONE case.

The FLIR ONE case packs a full thermal imaging camera that sees variances in temperature on the infrared spectrum, and works with either the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s, along with the FLIR ONE companion app. It can show you a live view of the world broken down by relative heat, and it’s coming to Apple Stores and Apple’s online retail portal in August, with pre-orders at FLIR ONE’s website kicking off tomorrow.

We got some hands-on time with the FLIR ONE when it was first previewed at CES this year, and the tech was impressive even in that pre-launch state. The FLIR ONE provides a good option for various applications, including finding thermal leaks in homes and commercial buildings, as well as water leaks, and for finding lost pets in the dark, hunting wild game, or just generally creeping out and looking for people in the dark. Both consumers and contractor/surveyors/professionals have reason to get this thing, and FLIR ONE has built-in a few software features to make it more than a one-trick pony, with time lapse, paint and panorama functionality via the official app.

FLIR ONE has a built-in battery good for two hours of continuous use, and adds only 3.9 ounces to your phone. It also comes in Space Gray (available first) and silver or gold to match your phone’s look (those two are coming later). Pre-orders for the U.S. kick off tomorrow at 9 AM ET, with a price of $349.99.

BitLit Partners With HarperCollins To #Make Buying Digital #Versions Of #Books You #Already Own Easier

#GNN - The #idea behind BitLit is pretty simple: scan the title page of a book you already own, write your name on the copyright page and scan that, too, and within a few seconds, you have access to the e-book version of your book.
In an ideal world, this would work for any book. But the current state of digital publishing isn’t exactly perfect, so while the number of publishers that support BitLit is growing, it remains limited. Some publishers make those e-books available for free, but most charge a fee for the service (most of the time, that’s somewhere between $2 and $6). Others already sell readers a bundle that includes the physical book and a free copy of the e-book through BitLit.

What was mostly missing from BitLit, however, was support from a large mainstream publisher, but it looks like those are slowly coming on board now, too. Starting today, BitLit is running a pilot with HarperCollins that will bring some of that publisher’s books like Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon and Gregory Maguire’s Wicked into the program.

This is still a pilot so there aren’t many books, but it’s a clear validation that BitLit’s concept is gaining traction in the publishing world.

Currently, BitLit has about 20,000 titles in its program, which is 10,000 more than three months ago. Those include most of the programming books from O’Reilly, for example, but also a few university presses and many smaller imprints.

BitLit’s most obvious competitor is Amazon’s MatchBook service — though I’m not sure how many people are actually familiar with that, given that Amazon doesn’t really promote it. MatchBook only works for physical books purchased from Amazon, whereas BitLit doesn’t have any similar restrictions. Amazon has just under 70,000 English-language books in its program. It, too, doesn’t have the rights from many mainstream publishing houses, but while BitLit is trying to work with publishers, Amazon’s relationship with the industry is pretty strained right now.

Against all odds: Energy projects to be completed by 2017, says CM

(GNN) - LAHORE: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Saturday that his Pakistan Muslim League government was committed to eradicating load shedding. He was addressing a meeting of the special committee for energy constituted by the prime minister. Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal presided over the meeting.

Sharif said that the government would ensure that all ongoing energy projects were completed by 2017. He said that the provision of electricity was inextricably linked with the promotion of agriculture, industrial growth and prosperity. The chief minister said that the generation of reasonably priced hydropower was a leading priority of the government. Sharif said that overreliance on thermal technology for power generation by former governments was a grave error. He said that the government was trying to overcome the energy crisis through a multipronged strategy.

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal and Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif also addressed the meeting.

Later during the day, Sharif said that Ramazan Bazaars had been established to provide the public with reasonably priced necessities. He said that the government would not allow black marketeers and hoarders to exploit the public. Sharif was speaking to journalists after a surprise visit to the People’s Colony Ramazan Bazaar.

The chief minister was en route to Lahore from Rawalpindi when he directed the pilot of his helicopter to land in Gujranwala, without prior notice. He then proceeded to inspect the Peoples Colony Ramazan Bazaar.  The district authorities were also unaware of Sharif’s programme.

Sharif visited vendors’ stalls and inspected the quality and price of the commodities being sold. The chief minister spoke to the customers in the bazaar to ascertain the price and quality of items being sold. The people told Sharif that reasonably priced commodities of adequate quality were available in the bazaar. The citizens said that prices in Ramazan Bazaars had stabilised and standards were being maintained after the chief minister had started inspecting them. He checked weighing machines and inspected the quality and moisture content of the flour being sold.

The chief minister also visited the Shaheenabad Ramazan Bazaar. Sharif especially checked sugar and flour stalls. On discovering flour of inferior quality, the chief minister directed the authorities to seal Muzaffar Flour Mill. Sharif directed the officials to relax the restriction of a one-kilogramme sale of sugar per consumer and allow two kilogramme sales. The chief minister also inspected weights and measures in the bazaar.

Talking to journalists on the occasion, the chief minister said that Faisalabad’s Ramazan Bazaars were superior to the ones he had seen in Okara and Kasur. He expressed satisfaction with the prices and quality of the items being offered for sale in the Ramazan Bazaars of the city. Sharif directed district officials to check the prices of basic necessities being sold in the open market. The chief minister said that his government had zero tolerance for hoarders and black-marketeers.
