According to an ISPR press release issued here on Sunday, the CTC is a strategic road link to facilitate trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan and will directly and indirectly help revive the local economy of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).

The CTC which was being built by Army engineers and funded by friendly countries is a 705-km-long road network of international standard that passes through southern KPK and Fata.

The USAID-funded 76-km-long Shakai-Makeen Road which was inaugurated on Sunday is an important lateral along the CTC, connecting the two main axes of Trade Corridor ie, Road Bannu – Miranshah – Ghulam Khan and Road Wana – Aangor Ada. Apart from other economic, security and strategic advantages, the newly-constructed roads have reduced travelling times considerably.

These projects are aimed at improving the quality of life in tribal areas and addressing the problem of militancy on long-term basis.

Referring to operation Zarb-e-azb, COAS said that the operation is progressing successfully as per plan. He said while focusing on early completion, the army will continue with rehabilitation and reconstruction activities.

A comprehensive plan in this regard has been chalked out in consultation with the government, he added. Earlier on his arrival in SWA, COAS was received by Corps Commander Lieutenant-General Hidayat-ur-Rehman and tribal elders.

Prime Minister said we should redeem our pledge to build the Quaid’s Pakistan, for this we must first reclaim our country from the forces of darkness and obscurantism, operation Zarb-e-Azb is a step in that direction and it was a step taken with great caution, even reluctance, and only after every other option had been exhausted.

Pakistan army captures high-ranking Taliban commander

(GNN) - The Pakistani military has captured a high-ranking Taliban commander who once tried to blow up former president Pervez Musharraf and later escaped jail with hundreds of other prisoners, security officials said on Tuesday.

Adnan Rashid was captured on Friday in a house where he was living with his family in northwest Pakistan's mountainous region bordering Afghanistan, the officials said. He was injured in a shootout during his arrest.

Rashid, captured in the Wana area of South Waziristan,

is the first major Taliban commander captured since the military launched an offensive in neighbouring North Waziristan last month. The army says it will drive Taliban insurgents from their key strongholds in the region.

The offensive followed years of pressure on Pakistan by its NATO allies to crack down on Taliban havens in North Waziristan.

But local residents said that most militants moved out well before ground troops arrived. More than half a million civilians were also ordered to leave last month before the offensive began. Government figures show more than 900,000 have sought aid, although that also indicates fraud and duplications.

Since then, the government has seized control of Miranshah, the capital of North Waziristan. It claims to have killed hundreds of militants.

Rashid, believed to be in his mid-30s, is a former Pakistani air force officer who tried to become a suicide bomber before he was jailed for a 2003 attempt to blow up then-President Musharraf.

He escaped from jail in 2012 along with nearly 400 other militants after militants attacked Bannu prison using rocket propelled grenades and assault rifles.

Following his release, he claimed responsibility for masterminding another jail break that freed 250 prisoners, made a series of YouTube videos and wrote an open letter attempting to justify the assassination attempt on schoolgirl activist Malala Yousafzai.

Local residents in the area where Rashid was captured say that leaflets purporting to be from the Taliban were being circulated, blaming Rashid's capture on some local Taliban commanders and promising vengeance.

In recent months the Pakistani Taliban, always an uneasy alliance of competing militias, has been beset by a series of internal power struggles.

Also on Tuesday, three Pakistani soldiers and six Taliban militants were killed in a gun battle in the village of Fateh Khel near the town of Mir Ali in North Waziristan.

No other choice but to stand with the army: Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan Monday said his party was left with no other choice but to stand with the army after the decision of going ahead with the comprehensive offensive has already been taken.
He said he learnt about the launch of operation in North Waziristan on TV and questioned ‘shouldn’t they have taken us into confidence first?’ “Now what other choice do we have except for standing with the army?”

Imran Khan asked is it a good practice in democracy that the Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) comes forward to announce that an operation has been launched?

He said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, which is the biggest victim of terrorism, was not taken on board. The KP government, therefore, has not made any arrangements for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), he added.

“If there was no other choice but to go ahead with an operation, then at least we should been taken into confidence,” he lamented.

He said the Prime Minister did not ensure to put the dialogue process under a leadership it had deserved.
