According to details, senior provincial minister Nawab Sanaullah Zehri tabled the resolution in the house, condemning the ‘unconstitutional and illegal’ moves to damage the present democratic system.

The resolution stated that all undemocratic and unconstitutional activities must be stopped to save the democratic system.

Imran Khan vows to peacefully lead supporters to red zone Tuesday

#GNN - #ISLAMABAD: #Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Imran Khan Monday announced to lead his supporters into the red zone of the capital city to stage a peaceful protest in the ‘fake’ (National) assembly and ‘fake’ Prime Minister House.
“Promise me that not a single pot will be broken and you will remain completely peaceful,” he took a pledge from the participants of his party’s sit-in, being staged fifth day on, by asking them to raise their hands.

The red zone houses Supreme Court of Pakistan, Parliament House, Prime Minister House, President Houses and other important buildings including embassies of various countries, diplomatic enclaves, Foreign Office, NADRA, Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation and parliament lodges.

“I don’t want you to come in confrontation with the police. I will lead you and you will follow me. I will take the first bullet,” Imran Khan said, adding, ‘we will stage a peaceful protest first in the fake (National) assembly and then in the fake Prime Minister House’.

However, he said, he was sure Pakistani police will not open fire on him. He warned that in case some ‘Gullu Butts’ picked up arms against his supporters, they will not find any place to hide anywhere in the world.

The PTI chief also warned the police not to take any such step that may lead to a chaos.

He invited men, women and children from across the country to join the tomorrow’s peaceful protest demonstration.

Defending his decision to launch a civil disobedience campaign, Imran Khan termed it a ‘best weapon’ to attain ‘Azadi’ (independence) in a peaceful manner.

“In case Nawaz Sharif gets scared and takes a flight to Raiwind, we will still be able to bring him to his knees through civil disobedience, we will still be able to topple his government,” he argued.

He said he and people like him remained slaves to the rulers like the ones in power today but he would never want the future generations to face such slavery.

Imran Khan questioned on what merit the Prime Minister had appointed his close relatives on lucrative positions. “What is the qualification and merit on the basis of which Nawaz Sharif placed his daughter on Rs100 billion fund?” he asked.

“What kind of democracy it is that is not based on merit; this is a fake democracy,” he reiterated.

Shaharyar Khan elected chairman PCB

#GNN - LAHORE: Former diplomat Shaharyar Khan was Monday elected Pakistan´s cricket chief for a three-year term, a move aimed at ending a 14-month leadership tussle which has left the governing body in disarray.
Khan, 80, becomes the 30th chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) but the only one to have a second tenure, having held the post between December 2003 to October 2006.

Khan was elected unopposed under the Board´s new constitution adopted last month in a bid to resolve the dispute triggered in May last year when then-chairman Zaka Ashraf was suspended by Islamabad High Court.

After Ashraf´s suspension, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appointed veteran journalist Najam Sethi as PCB head. But court orders and government decrees saw Sethi swapping power with Ashraf five times.

The Supreme Court last month ordered elections under the new constitution and named a retired judge as interim PCB chief and election commissioner.

The PCB said in a statement Khan was unanimously elected unopposed by the 10-member board of governors.

Khan, who also served as the country´s foreign secretary between 1990-94, was appointed PCB head by military ruler General Pervez Musharraf but was removed after the fiasco in the Oval Test against England in 2006. Pakistan forfeited that Test after then-skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq refused to lead the team onto the field in protest at being penalised by the umpires for ball-tampering.

Khan was blamed for not handling the matter properly. But his experience as foreign secretary was credited as being instrumental in reviving Pakistan-India ties in 1999. Then Pakistan toured India after a gap of 12 years, with Khan as team manager. (GNN)(AFP)(AIP)

Nawaz Sharif said: “we will not allow any harm to supremacy of law and continuity of democracy. He said that IDPs of North Waziristan will not be left homeless, adding they would be sent back to their native areas as soon as situation improves in the war stricken tribal region.

He said that the army launched decisive operation and it was continuing successfully. The prime minister condemned Israeli cruelties against Palestinians and said that it was moment of concern for the international community. Azadi March will rid country of ‘monarchy’: Imran Khan

#GNN - #LAHORE: #Pakistan #Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan Wednesday said he sees a new Pakistan from tomorrow, as he announced to go ahead with his ‘Azadi March’ and rid the country of ‘monarchy’.

Addressing the party workers here, he said the ‘monarchy’ will be overthrown and an apolitical interim set up will be installed in the country which will hold transparent elections in the country.

He rejected the Prime Minister’s proposal to have the PTI’s allegations of poll rigging investigated by a three-judge Supreme Court commission.

Imran Khan ruled out a transparent probe in the presence of PM Nawaz Sharif. “How can a commission conduct a transparent investigation in the presence of Nawaz Sharif who himself was involved in getting the elections rigged,” he said.

He said PTI will bring back the country’s Rs200 billion stashed away in overseas banks and that Pakistan will have a mechanism of accountability which it has never seen to date.

Telling his workers to keep their spirits high and brace for the ‘Azadi March’ tomorrow, he said those who got the elections rigged will be exposed and punished.

He said Javed Hashmi will be with among PTI workers tomorrow and will be very much part of the ‘Azadi March’ on Islamabad.

“I will remain with my party workers on the streets till we get justice,” the PTI chief asserted.

Earlier, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar said the decision of Lahore High Court (LHC) that barred staging of long marches and sit-downs in Islamabad will be implemented in letter and spirit.

Chaudhry Nisar declared demands of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan as ‘illegal and unconstitutional’.

He said the district administration will decide whether the protest is legal and within the parameters of the Constitution.

The Interior Minister said the PTI chief had, in the past, repeatedly demanded constitution of a three-judge Supreme Court commission to investigate into the allegations of irregularities in May 11, 2013 general elections.

However, PTI chief Imran Khan said in a media statement that LHC had barred ‘unconstitutional’ protest but his party would go ahead and stage a ‘constitutional’ march.

PM extends his heartfelt felicitations to all Pakistanis on 68th Independence Day

#GNN - #Islamabad- Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a statement said that I wish to extend my heartfelt felicitations to all Pakistanis on the auspicious occasion of the 68th independence day of Pakistan.
He said this day is a powerful reminder of the heroic struggle undertaken by the Muslims of the sub-continent for separate homeland where they could live their lives with freedom and dignity, in harmony with their religious and cultural values.

PM said that our forefathers underwent great trial and tribulation, with millions suffering the travails of dispossession and exile and hundreds of thousand laying the ultimate sacrifice at the altar of freedom, so that our children may have a country to call their own, where they could build a prosperous and secure future for themselves.

He reiterated that let us not forget that Pakistan was the culmination of a long and arduous constitutional struggle.

Prime Minister said we should redeem our pledge to build the Quaid’s Pakistan, for this we must first reclaim our country from the forces of darkness and obscurantism, operation Zarb-e-Azb is a step in that direction and it was a step taken with great caution, even reluctance, and only after every other option had been exhausted.

He further said Operation Zarb-e-Azb is not simply a campaign to restore the state’s writ to North Waziristan, which had become a breeding ground for terrorism and extremism, it is a battle for the soul of Pakistan.

Avoiding #competition: Qatar uninterested in #LNG supply tender

#GNN - #ISLAMABAD: #Qatar has turned down an offer to #participate in #Pakistan’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply tender, saying it is interested in clinching a direct government-to-government deal to meet needs of the energy-starved South Asian nation.

“The government suggested that Qatar Gas should take part in a tender floated by Pakistan State Oil (PSO) for LNG import but Doha refused and showed interest in striking a state-to-state deal without getting involved in any tender,” an official aware of the developments said.

The last date for submitting bids under the PSO tender was June 30, which was extended to July 15 on the demand of participating companies, which required some time to prepare bid documents.

According to officials, the tender has got an encouraging response from interested players, in sharp

contrast to bids sought by the previous government, when only two domestic companies filed documents because of cancellation of tenders several times earlier.

In the current PSO tender, big energy giants have expressed interest and submitted bids including Royal Dutch Shell, British Petroleum and Mitsubishi. Officials term this a good omen for Pakistan’s energy needs as these companies have LNG supplies available with them.

The last tender floated by the previous government was struck down by the Supreme Court as only two domestic companies took part in the process.

According to officials, Pakistan is seeking to set a benchmark LNG price through bidding, following which it will try to weigh different options for a direct government-to-government deal. For the time being, talks for finalising an agreement with Qatar have stalled until the time bids are accepted.

The government is working on three proposals for LNG import. These include securing supplies through bids, a contract on a government-to-government basis with countries like Qatar and imports on the basis of spot purchases.

At present, all attention is focused on the bidding process as the government has drawn criticism from inside the country on reports that it will agree on LNG import from Qatar at a higher price.

Through the tender, the government will be able to fix a benchmark price for negotiating a deal with Qatar and other countries.

Meanwhile, officials said, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources to review the progress on setting up an LNG terminal by the successful bidder Elengy Terminal Pakistan Limited (ETPL).

ETPL has hired China Harbour Engineering Company as its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

In the meeting, an ETPL representative said they would start dredging the water channel very soon. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is likely to conduct the groundbreaking of the terminal in the first week of next month.

First LNG shipment is expected to arrive in the first quarter of next year. The country plans to import 200 mmcfd in the initial phase, which will be increased to 400 mmcfd later.

The issue was one of the key agenda items during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by top civil and military leadership, including Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

An official, privy to the development, said the meeting discussed Afghanistan in the post-election and post-US drawdown scenario. The army chief briefed the meeting about his visit wherein he had asked the Afghan authorities to take steps against cross-border firing incidents, he added.

He said Gen Raheel took up the issue during his talks with his Afghan counterpart Sher Muhammad Karimi and International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) Commander General Joseph Dunford in Kabul on Monday.

Officials said the army chief told the meeting that he shared his concerns with Afghan authorities regarding the alleged sanctuaries of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan and said that Islamabad suspected that the TTP chief Mullah Fazlullah was being given refuge by Afghan security agencies.

The issue was discussed in the backdrop of ongoing peace talks with the TTP which had entered the second phase when the infighting within the Taliban ranks and government’s cautious approach towards their demand for release of non-combatants put the process on the backburner.

Though Tuesday’s meeting discussed the security situation in regional and national context, the official statement did not have a mention of talks with the Taliban.

On the other hand, officials did not say as to whether the issue of talks with the Taliban was taken up or not irrespective of the fact that the interior minister had recently announced that the government was going to resurrect the talk’s process.

The meeting, according to the statement, discussed national and regional security situation. Additionally, the law and order situation in Balochistan and Karachi was also reviewed.

The interior minister briefed the premier on the law and order situation in Karachi in particular and it was decided the targeted operations against miscreants would continue in the metropolis.
