IDrive Launches Facebook Backup So You Never Lose The Photos And Videos You Were Tagged In

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/idrive-like-most-online-backup-services_23.html
IDrive, like most online backup services, has long focused on keeping the data on your local hard drive safe by backing it up to the cloud. Now, however, the company is launching a new product that expands its services beyond your local drive and deeper into the cloud. IDrive now allows you to also back up your pictures and video on Facebook to its servers.

This backup feature, it’s worth noting, extends beyond your own photos and videos. If a friend tags you in a photo, for example, that image will be included in your backup. Normally, those images would be gone if your friend is a drama queen and untags or un-friends you (or in less dramatic situations simply deletes the picture).

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/idrive-like-most-online-backup-services_23.html
Facebook, the company argues, has evolved “into such an important part of social interaction that using the media site to store or share pictures / videos is frequently the chosen way of exchanging data.”

The service is now available to all IDrive users (including those on the free 5GB plan) and once all the data from Facebook is backed up, users can access their images and videos from any web browser and the company’s iOS app. An Android app, the company tells me, is “coming soon” and all the data is automatically encrypted with what IDrive calls “an NSA-proof private key option.”

It’s worth noting that IDrive isn’t the only company that offers this kind of backup feature. There are a few tools that allow you to download your data onto your own drive, of course, but services like OwnBackup and Backupify also offer the ability to back up your Facebook data. Chances are that IDrive, too, will add support for other online services in the near future.

Microsoft Releases First Worldwide Telescope-Driven Planetarium

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/microsoft-releases-first-worldwide.html
As kids, we all had dreams of what we wanted to be when we grow up. I’m not a hundred percent sure, but I think I’m not going out on a limb when I say that space and astronauts rank high up in that list of “what I want to be when I grow up”. This month, Microsoft just encouraged that dream even more with Microsoft Research’s WorldWide Telescope’s planetarium in China.

The WorldWide Telescope (WWT) enables children and adults alike to view space via a desktop or a “real” planetarium all thanks to the Internet. In order to make the experience educational, the project has taken on the help of experienced astronomers and educators to provide guided tours of the Universe – or at least the most interesting parts of it.

Going one step further, Microsoft Research launched the first WWT-driven planetarium in China. This means that Chinese school children (not exclusively, though) have the opportunity to discover space in the 8-meter dome edifice. The planetarium is installed at the Shixinlu primary school.

To make things even more interesting, not only can the children explore space via existing tours. They can also create their own custom space tours!

One might think that the world has so many other issues to deal with at the moment, but I think this project is just an invaluable. After all, instilling that desire to learn and explore in children at such an early age is something that we all should be paying attention to. And, while not all those children may grow up to be astronauts, the mere fact that they have this opportunity to learn in a high-tech environment will only bring them good.

For those of us who can’t resist the allure of space but are not in China, all is not lost. The WWT is still accessible via the Windows Client or the Web Client (for users of all other operating systems).

Google’s “Deep Learning” Computers Out-Smart The Creators

A Google software engineer has said that the company’s “deep learning” decision-making systems have been able to crack coding problems that the engineers who designed them can’t.
http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/googles-deep-learning-computers-out.html
Quoc V.Le made the revelation at the Machine Learning Conference in San Francisco on Friday, where he also outlined how Google are able to use these large clusters of computers known as “deep learning” systems.

Google’s technology is based around a layered architecture, with each successive layer building upon what all the layers beneath it have learnt. So the bottom-most layer of the neural network can detect changes in color in an image’s pixels, and then the layer above may be able to use that to recognize certain types of edges. After adding successive analysis layers, different branches of the system can develop detection methods for faces, rocking chairs, computers, and so on.

This tech is used for services such as Google translate and Android’s voice-controlled search. But as Quoc V.Le explains, the software has actually learnt to pick out features in objects that humans struggle to see, like a paper shredder for example.

Learning “how to engineer features to recognize that that’s a shredder – that’s very complicated,” he explained. “I spent a lot of thoughts on it and couldn’t do it.”

Qouc’s colleagues struggled to identify various models of paper shredders when shown photos of them, yet the computer system had no trouble and had a greater success rate. He admitted that he would be unable to write a program to do this.

“We had to rely on data to engineer the features for us, rather than engineer the features ourselves,” Quoc explained.

So for some things, Google researchers are no longer able to explain how the system has learnt to indentify certain objects. It would seem that the programming can think independently from those who created it and its complex learning processes are unfathomable. Although this “thinking” is limited to very specific situations, the proof is there that it can happen.

Cutting Back On The Human Experts

Google doesn’t think that this technology will ever develop into full blown artificial intelligence. But what is so appealing to the tech giant is that with “deep learning”, the company can hire fewer human experts because the systems will be able to solve problems the researchers can’t.

“Machine learning can be difficult because it turns out that even though in theory you could use logistic regression and so on, but in practice what happens is we spend a lot of time on data processing inventing features and so on. For every single problem we have to hire domain experts,” said Quoc.

“We want to move beyond that . there are certainly problems we can’t engineer features of and we want machines to do that.” Although this is exciting stuff, it also has an air of Skynet about it don’t you think? Should we be excited or afraid? Share your thoughts.

Apple Awarded $290M By Jury In Patent Case Retrial Against Samsung

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/apple-awarded-290m-by-jury-in-patent.html
Samsung has been ordered to pay out $290 million to Apple in a retrial of the major, over-$1 billion patent infringement case that made headlines last year. Samsung won a retrial of around $450 million of the damages when Judge Lucy Koh found that a portion of the award was subject to re-evaluation.

Apple had been seeking $380 million total from this decision, but Samsung was looking to pay only $52 million, so while neither side got exactly what they wanted, Apple came out more or less a winner. The lawyers in the case have a chance to go over the figures and dispute any numbers they take issue with, which they likely will, but for now that’s where the decision stands.

Samsung has been accused of paying out what it owed to Apple in small value coins in a number of false memes circulating the web, both when the original award went through and this time, too. It likely won’t do that, as it’s ridiculous, but it can’t be pleased with this result.

The eight member jury that awarded these damages was evaluating how much Samsung owes apple for the violation of five patents related to iPhone and iPad across 13 Samsung products in total.

Vine Focuses On Global Expansion With 19 New Languages

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/vine-focuses-on-global-expansion-with.html
Twitter’s six-second video sharing app, Vine, today launches in a number of new languages. Nineteen, to be exact.

New languages include Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Thai and Turkish on both the iOS and Android apps, as well as Filipino and Polish on the Android app.

In the future, the company is also focused on filtering the trending and popular videos based on country. That way, users in a certain country will have the option to see what’s popular with their fellow countrymen as opposed to global popularity.

Here’s what Vine had to say about the release:

Now, it’s even easier for people around the world to watch and share posts that make us laugh, teach us something new or help us find out what’s happening in the world.

We’re also beginning to explore ways to surface Vine videos that are popular in a particular country.

Wherever you are in the world be it Japan, Brazil or somewhere in between we hope this update makes it easier for you to discover and create videos that bring us all closer together.

Vine recently updated its app with a few new editing features, including the ability to remove earlier clips from the Vine and save drafts, two features that were made available on Instagram Video.

But Vine continues to push despite competition from the Facebook-owned behemoth. Earlier this month, Vine launched on Windows Phone.

In August, Vine topped 40 million users. The app’s growth rate certainly increased after launching on Android in June, when the company had 13 million users.(techc)(techcrunch)(GNN)

Chrome 32 Beta Launches With Support For Animated WebP Images, Faster Touch Response On Mobile Sites

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/chrome-32-beta-launches-with-support.html
Google today launched its latest Chrome beta, which brings support for animated WebP images to all of its supported platforms. On Android, this update features a new way to improve touch performance and support for the Vibration API.

cube_chromeWebP is Google attempt to displace the ubiquitous JPEG and PNG image formats with a more efficient image format. Animated WebP images, however, are essentially an alternative to animated GIFs. Unlike this rather old format, animated WebP images use true alpha channels and each frame can be lossy or lossless as needed. Compared to animated GIFs, these WebP versions can be significantly smaller, but given that WebP isn’t supported by many browser vendors, this is basically just a cool tech demo for now.

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/chrome-32-beta-launches-with-support.html
The way Google made touch input on Android faster is actually pretty nifty. Currently, Chrome uses a 300ms delay when it registers a tap as it waits for a double-tap to zoom. On responsive sites, however, there’s no need to wait for this as the site is already zoomed in. So Google has now disabled double-tap to zoom on responsive mobile sites to make the app respond a little bit faster to your taps.

The other change worth noting in today’s update is that – as previously announced – it will block Netscape Plugin Architecture Programming Interface (NPAPI) plugins. Starting in January, only a handful of popular NPAPI plugins will be allowed to run in the stable version of Chrome ( Microsoft’s Silverlight, Unity, Google Earth, Java, Google Talk and Facebook Video) and this change is now making its way through the beta channel before it lands in the stable version in a few weeks.(techc)(techcrunch)(GNN)

Google Wallet Invades Your Physical One With A New Prepaid Debit Card

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/google-wallet-invades-your-physical-one.html
For a while there a physical Google Wallet card seemed like the stuff of rumors, and then it looked like another project lost to the ages when former Wallet chief Osama Bedier (who purportedly pushed the concept) officially resigned from his post earlier this year. Larry Page’s disapproval of the card after a buggy pre-launch demo certainly didn’t help the project’s chances either.

But here we are, months later, and Google has gone ahead with the project anyway. The folks at Droid-Life spotted the updated Google support entry first, which allows Google Wallet users to order their own physical Wallet cards that first batch is expected to hit doorsteps in under two weeks.

Don’t expect Google to be getting into the lending and collections game (but hell, could you imagine?) this card is a purely prepaid affair, affording its users access to the funds that are currently stored in their Google Wallets. At first glance it doesn’t seem like a game-changer considering most of the particulars will be familiar to anyone who already owns a debit card, but there are some neat Googlean touches here. According to a newly-posted article on Google’s Commerce blog, there’s a distinct lack of service fees tied to using the card, and users will get instant notifications on their phones when they’ve made a purchase (just like Simple).

So sure, if you have a Google Wallet account and it’s got a few dollars ferreted away in it, there’s really no reason not to get one. While it may be a low-risk action for you though, the card provides plenty of value to the folks in Mountain View an earlier report from AllThingsD painted Google’s push into a more physical payment scheme as a way to gather more consumer purchasing data to help power its gigantic online advertising business.

This is a developing story, please refresh for updates.

Source: Microsoft In Talks To Buy Shoutcast And Winamp From AOL

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/source-microsoft-in-talks-to-buy.html
Looks like the llama may not get off so easily after all. AOL yesterday announced that it was shutting down Winamp, media playing software for Windows and Android devices that it picked up through its $80 million acquisition of Nullsoft in 1999. But today Techcrunch has learned that AOL is talks with Microsoft to sell Winamp, along with Shoutcast, a media streaming service also developed by Nullsoft. We have also learned that AOL has been planning to announce the closure of Shoutcast next week.

AOL has declined to comment for this story, and we are still waiting to hear back from Microsoft with a response. From what we understand, the deal is not yet finalized, with AOL and Microsoft still working out the price. It could also be very wishful thinking from those intent on trying to save both services.

AOL did not give any guidance yesterday on what would happen with Shoutcast.

If this is correct, it would represent an interesting, and strange, twist in the story.

On the AOL side, it’s fairly clear why AOL is closing down Winamp and Shoutcast, and it makes sense why it would want to sell both.

As an owner, AOL has never given much of a strong direction to the products, at a time when other digital music companies have been building up audiences and evolving technologies (although, as we pointed out earlier this week when writing about Rdio layoffs, the digital music business is tough). It has already shuttered and sold off other music assets as part of a bigger strategic shift to focus resources as a web publisher (it owns TechCrunch, Engadget, Huffington Post and a number of other bloggy properties), and as a rich-media advertising network operator across those and third-party sites, with an increasing focus on ad-tech to improve how those ads are delivered and measured.

Yes, music properties could very much fit into that mix, but not without a lot of financial and strategic investment in them.

On the Microsoft side, the Windows giant has had its own setbacks in music (RIP Zune). But it has more recently thrown a lot of eggs into the Xbox Music basket, which works on the Xbox 360, Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows Phone 8,iOS and Android devices, offering free, ad-supported streaming, subscriptions, and downloaded music.

Where would Winamp or Shoutcast fit into that mix? While I’m still trying to figure out what Microsoft would do with Winamp, Shoutcast has a platform that acts as a portal to over 50,000 radio stations. This could be one area that Microsoft might want to add to the Xbox Music platform, and which it currently lacks, to complement its Pandora-style personal radio feature.

Update: Microsoft has declined to comment for this story.

Google Launches Newsstand For Android, Combines Google Play Magazines And Currents Into A Single App

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/google-launches-newsstand-for-android.html
Google today launched Google Play Newsstand for Android, an app that brings together the current Google Play Magazines app available in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia, as well as Google Currents, the company’s answer to apps like Flipboard.

The Play Newsstand will feature about 1,900 free and paid publications. The selection ranges from newspapers like The Australian, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal to magazines like The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Wired and free blogs and news sites that have partnered with Google.

http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/google-launches-newsstand-for-android.html
Google says this new app will “put the news you care about most front and center and presents stories that interest you based on your tastes. The more you read the better it will get.” The app will automatically format blog posts and other sources for reading on a tablet or phone. Users will be able to subscribe to new sources in the app and for paid publications  in the Google Play store. Posts are cached on the device for offline reading.

As a Google spokesperson told me, the app was developed by the same team as Currents and it will likely feel familiar to existing Currents users. Over the next few days, users in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia (that is, all the countries where the old Google Play Magazines app was available) will be automatically upgraded to the new Newsstand app. Currents users can upgrade to Play Newsstand by downloading the app and all their news sources will be automatically transferred.

Google also offers a Currents app for iOS. That app, Google told me, will be upgraded to the Newsstand app “early next year.”

Currents first launched about two years ago as a way to read free sources, but it also featured tools for publishers that allowed them to add their sites to the app and customize their appearance by adding feeds, photos and social updates. This publisher program, Google tells me, will continue.

Facebook makes changes to its data use policies

Facebook moved ahead Friday with changes to its privacy policies that make it clear that the company can include users’ profile pictures, location and other personal information in advertisements.

But the social networking company deleted a controversial line, proposed in August, stating that it assumes that teens on the site have obtained permission from their parents or guardians.
http://www.techc.tk/2013/11/facebook-makes-changes-to-its-data-use.html
The changes did little to quell critics who say Facebook continues to expand the scope of data the network collects from users. And, they said, the deletion of the line on teens did not clarify whether the company would continue to track their behavior inappropriately on the site.

“Corporations like Facebook should not be profiting from the personal and sensitive information of children and teens, and parents and teens should have the right to control their personal information online,” Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) said Friday.

Facebook, which laid out the new policies on its official blog, said the additional language did not represent anything new in the way it collects data.

Chief privacy officer Erin Egan said Friday that the language concerning teens was meant to get children and parents to discuss the terms of use. “[We] were not seeking and would not have gained additional rights as a result of this addition,” she said. Given the response, however, Egan said that Facebook decided it was best to omit the sentence.

After the policy changes were proposed in August, about half a dozen privacy groups wrote to Edith Ramirez, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, asking her to investigate whether the updates had violated an agreement between Facebook and the agency. Finalized last year, that settlement prohibited Facebook from making material changes to its policies without notifying users.

An FTC spokesman said the agency does not comment on investigations or internal deliberations. He added: “The FTC rigorously monitors compliance with all of its orders, and that includes reviewing any material changes to the privacy policy of a company that is under a privacy order from the FTC.”

On Thursday, Markey introduced a bill that would explicitly prohibit companies from collecting data on children ages 13 to 15. (Children under 13 are not allowed on Facebook and other social media sites under privacy laws).

Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, said getting rid of the teen provision is a modest victory for privacy advocates. But he said he was disappointed to see the social network proceed with the broader changes.

“It still leaves the larger problem that the site is working more with data brokers and collecting more geolocation information. We believe [these practices] require new safeguards.”
