According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), PAF jets pounded militants hideouts in the outskirts of Mir Ali, killing 16 terrorists and destroying 7 of their hideouts.

An explosive dump of the militants was also eliminated in the air strikes.

ISIL militants declare Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as the caliph

BAGHDAD: The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Sunni militants fighting across Syria and Iraq – have proclaimed the establishment of a “caliphate” in a move that experts say could signal the birth of a new era of transnational jihadism.
Now calling itself the Islamic State, the group has called on all other related Sunni factions, including al-Qaeda, to pledge their allegiance to the new state, which it says stretches from Aleppo in Syria to Diyala in Iraq. Put simply, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has declared war on Al-Qaeda.

In a statement distributed online on Sunday – the newly-minted Islamic State declared its chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as "the caliph" and "leader for Muslims everywhere". Baghdadi is thought to be the leader and strategic thinker behind ISIL.

Its announcement that it has restored the Caliphate “is likely the most significant development in international jihadism since 9/11,” said Charles Lister, a visiting fellow at the Brookings Doha Centre who studies jihadist groups.

The impact of this announcement will be global as al-Qaeda affiliates and independent jihadist groups must now definitively choose to support and join the Islamic State or to oppose it.”

The group’s statement – translated from Arabic into English, French, Russian and German – made it clear it would perceive any group that failed to pledge allegiance an enemy of Islam,” Mr Lister said.

Already, this new Islamic State has received statements of support and opposition from jihadist factions in Syria, he confirmed.

Released on the first day of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, the statement establishing a caliphate, a system of rule that ended nearly 100 years ago with the fall of the Ottoman Empire, reads: “Here the flag of the Islamic State … rises and flutters. Its shade covers land from Aleppo [Syria] and Diyala [Iraq].

“The infidels are disgraced. The Sunnis are masters and are esteemed. The people of heresy are humiliated. The Sharia penalties are implemented, all of them.

“The front lines are defended, crosses and graves demolished. Governors and judges have been appointed, a tax has been enforced and courts will resolve disputes and complaints.”

ISIL, also known as ISIS, already controls large swathes of northern Iraq after a sustained assault which began with the overthrow of Iraqi control of the country’s second largest city of Mosul, near the Syrian border, on June 9.

Over the last two years it has established a strong presence in parts of Syria, controlling key oil fields in eastern Syria in the area bordering Iraq, levying taxes and other penalties and implementing strict Sharia law on besieged communities.

“Geographically, ISIS is already fully operational in Iraq and Syria; it has a covert presence in southern Turkey, appears to be establishing a small presence in Lebanon; and has supporters in Jordan, Gaza, the Sinai, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere,” Mr Lister said. “This could well be the birth of a totally new era of transnational jihadism.”

The announcement was also interpreted as a threat to al-Qaeda and its long-held position of leadership of the international jihadist cause.

“Put simply, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has declared war on al-Qaeda.”

Baghdadi took over the group in 2010. Back then ISI, as it was known, was aligned to al-Qaeda and in a weakened state following a surge of US forces deployed to Iraq and the coalition of Sunni tribal groups that fought against al-Qaeda’s presence in the country. But under his leadership the group thrived and is now believed to be the wealthiest militant organisation in the world with assets in the billions, “simultaneously implementing harsh mediaeval justice and a whole range of modern social services”, Mr Lister said.

Relations between between ISIL and its prior incarnations and al-Qaeda have been fraught with distrust, open competition, and outright hostility, said Aaron Zelin, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, describing the two groups as “now in an open war for supremacy of the global jihadist movement”.

ISIL “holds an advantage but the battle is not over yet,” he wrote in the institute’s journal.

Meanwhile, a fierce battle raged in the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit after the Iraqi military, backed by Shiite militia, launched an offensive to try to take back Tikrit from Sunni insurgents after they lost control of the area on June 11.

And while the military and Iraqi state television claimed security forces had cleared the centre of the city of militants, it appeared the army had been pushed back 15 kilometres from the city as the insurgents fought back, Tikrit residents said. (GNN) (Thenews)

France, Germany the spoilers on Africa´s big day

RIO DE JANEIRO: European powerhouses Germany and France block the way for Nigeria and Algeria to make some World Cup history on Monday.
Africa has never had two teams in the last 16 and if both can pull off upset wins, they will meet in the quarter finals and an African nation will be guaranteed a first ever place in the semi-finals.

French coach Didier Deschamps and Germany´s Joachim Loew know however that if they win, their sides will clash in the quarter finals.

France take on Nigeria in Brasilia at 9pm PST while Germany play Algeria, with the North Africans also playing for revenge, in Porto Alegre at 1 am PST (Tuesday).

Deschamps insists that he is concentrating on getting Karim Benzema, and the rest of the potent force that scored eight goals in Group E, ready to face the African champions.

Several players were rested for the Ecuador group game, when France were held to a 0-0 draw. So Mathieu Valbuena should return and Laurent Koscielny could line up in central defence alongside Raphael Varane as Mamadou Sakho is doubtful due to a thigh injury. Yohan Cabaye will return after missing the Ecuador game due to suspension, but Paul Pogba´s place is under threat from Moussa Sissoko.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi insists that his side´s dispute over bonuses is history now that their cash has been paid, and they are now concentrating on reaching the quarter-finals for the first time.

CSKA Moscow winger Ahmed Musa, who scored twice in the 3-2 defeat by Argentina, said: "We need to defend well, take our chances up front and learn from the Argentina game."

Germany have played Algeria twice -- at the World Cup in 1982 and in a 1964 friendly -- and lost both games, but it is Vahid Halilhodzic´s Algeria who have revenge on their mind.

The Desert Foxes have "not forgotten" 1982; when West Germany lost 2-1 to Algeria and then played out a 1-0 win over Austria that ensured the European neighbours qualified for the second round.

The game has gone down in football history as "The Shame of Gijon", after the Spanish city where it was played.

Algerian midfielder Hassan Yebda says the north Africans are equally interested in claiming a major scalp. "We are a little bit optimistic," said the Udinese midfielder cautiously. "Germany are the best team here, we need the perfect game and it would be a sensation if we can reach the quarter-finals."

Loew rejects talk of revenge as barely anyone in the German squad was even born when the shame game was played.

His side, minus Lukas Podolski who has a thigh injury, will start as favourites but he has also warned them against complacency. "Anyone who thinks that an easy opponent is waiting for us in the next round is making an enormous mistake," said Loew after Germany finished as Group G winners.

Team captain Philipp Lahm has also said Germany must prove on the field that they are worthy of the reputation of being Europe´s best hope at the World Cup. "We have had great teams in the past and this squad has great potential, but we have to take it a round at a time and play aggressively," he said. "I think we are the better team, but we have to prove that on the pitch."

The winners of the two games will meet in the quarter final in Rio de Janeiro on Friday. (AFP)

Australia, New Zealand push on with day-night Tests

SYDNEY: Cricket Australia said Monday it is pushing ahead with plans to stage an historic day-night Test match with New Zealand, possibly as early as the 2015-16 season.
CA chief executive James Sutherland and his New Zealand Cricket counterpart David White met in Melbourne last week during the International Cricket Council (ICC) annual conference to discuss the idea. They are devising plans to stage the match when New Zealand tour Australia in November 2015, with the venue to be determined, CA said.

The ICC gave its approval in 2012 for member countries to work together on staging Test cricket under lights. "We are serious about pushing ahead with the concept of day-night Test cricket," Sutherland said in a statement. "We feel it will only strengthen the position and possibilities for Test cricket in many parts of the world. There are many Test matches played during non-holiday periods when adults are at work and kids are at school and that´s not an ideal way to promote the highest form of the game."

Sutherland also said there was not a major team sport in the world that scheduled the majority of its premium content during the working week. "We´re not talking about playing the Boxing Day or New Year´s Test at night," Sutherland said. "The summer holiday period in Australia really lends itself to Test cricket, but at other times of the year it can be difficult for fans to attend or watch Test matches, be it here or in other parts of the world. That´s really at the heart of the issue. The challenge is to try to make Test cricket more accessible for fans."

White said his organisation was looking forward to contributing to the day-night Test concept, especially in terms of helping develop a new pink ball suitable for Test conditions.

"Australia continue to assess conditions to ensure they are appropriate to stage Test cricket at night, and we fully support that duty of care," White said in the CA statement.

Both governing bodies said they would continue to seek the opinion of players, spectators and broadcasters.

ICC chief executive David Richardson said he supported the idea. "I´m pleased that after the ICC board gave its thumbs-up during the 2012 annual conference and following extensive trials and debates, we are now at a stage when two of our members are contemplating playing the first-ever day-night Test".

New Zealand in driving seat as Williamsom shines

BRIDGETOWN: Kane Williamson´s highest Test score put New Zealand in control at 331 for seven in their second innings, a lead of 307 runs, on a rain-shortened fourth day of the third and final Test at Kensington Oval on Sunday.
His unbeaten 161 in over six hours at the crease was the highlight of a determined Black Caps effort that tilted the balance of an intriguing match.

When heavy rain swept across the ground in mid-afternoon, the tourists were poised to build on what was already a challenging target at 314 for six, ahead by 290. Only 20 more minutes of play was possible on the resumption, with one more wicket being lost for the addition of another 17 runs, before more rain rolled in.

That left New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum to contemplate his options for a declaration going into Monday´s final day, weather permitting.

A key factor in his consideration will be that the highest winning fourth innings total in a Test match at the venue is 311 by the Brian Lara-led West Indies against Australia in 1999.

Williamson´s innings was a masterful effort of concentration and shot-making. The elegant right-hander stroked 22 boundaries in a classy innings, putting the seal on an outstanding series for the 23-year-old that has brought him 413 runs so far.

McCullum contributed to his team´s improved second innings effort, scoring 25 in a 67-run fourth-wicket partnership with Williamson before he fell lbw to Kemar Roach in the fourth over of the day.

All-rounder Jimmy Neesham picked up from where his captain left off and was even more impressive, striking four sixes and three fours in an entertaining 51 out of a fifth-wicket stand of 91 before another powerful drive by the left-hander off debutant Jason Holder found Kraigg Brathwaite at short extra-cover.

Wicketkeeper-batsman B.J. Watling nudged and deflected his way to 29 while Williamson took centre stage in a sixth-wicket partnership of 79 as an increasingly frustrated Denesh Ramdin and his West Indies team seemed to run out of ideas.

Roach and the second new ball eventually brought the breakthrough after lunch, Watling cutting the fast bowler to Holder at backward point to become the Barbadian´s 100th Test wicket in his 26th Test, the 19th West Indian in the history of the game to reach that landmark. It was also his fourth wicket of the innings and eighth of the match, although his personal success was only a momentary distraction from the greater challenge facing the West Indies. (AFP)

Ruiz guides Costa Rica into first World Cup quarter final

RECIFE: Bryan Ruiz calmly guided 10-man Costa Rica through a tense penalty decider against Greece on Sunday and into the World Cup quarter finals for the first time in the country´s history.
The Ticos´ captain scored the goal that put Costa Rica ahead and also put away his penalty as the Central Americans kept their nerve to win the decider 5-3.

The two sides were 1-1 after regulation time with Sokratis Papastathopoulos cancelling out Ruiz´s goal in injury time to force extra time which also ended in deadlock.

Fanis Gekas missed Greece´s fourth penalty and Michael Umana converted Costa Rica´s fifth to seal the historic victory.

Costa Rica looked on target to pick off a new European scalp when in the 52nd minute Christian Bolanos found Ruiz on the edge of the penalty area and the skipper turned the ball into the net.

The shot by Ruiz, whose headed goal sank Italy in the key Group D clash, was not powerful. But Greek goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis and his defence seemed to stand still and watch it go by.

The goal brought Greece out of their shells and the pressure began to tell on the Costa Ricans.

Oscar Duarte brought down Jose Holebas in the 62nd minute and his second yellow card meant his immediate expulsion.

Greece poured forward but still Costa Rica held on and believed the game was theirs when Papastathopoulos struck in the second minute of injury time.

Gekas fired in a low shot which Keylor Navas could not hold and the Borussia Dortmund defender hit in an easy rebound. (AFP)

LOS ANGELES: The fourth installment of the smash "Transformers" franchise topped North American box office returns in its opening weekend, preliminary industry data showed Sunday.

Some bad reviews did not keep Michael Bay´s "Transformers: Age of Extinction" -- a massive-budget morphing robots epic -- from becoming the first movie of the year to open with $100 million on the domestic front, according to industry monitor Exhibitor Relations.

This chapter, which stars Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz, sees a powerful group of scientists scrambling to break new tech barriers.

Buddy comedy "22 Jump Street," featuring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, meanwhile pulled in $15.4 million in second place, for a total of $139.8 million after three weeks in theaters.

Starring Kevin Hart and Gabrielle Union, comedy "Think Like A Man Too" has all the couples back for a Las Vegas wedding, but romantic plans go awry as their misadventures get them into compromising situations. It earned fourth place with $10.4 million, bringing its total receipts to $48.2 million after two weeks on the silver screen.

Holding steady in fifth place was Angelina Jolie´s "Maleficent," a modern retelling of the life of Sleeping Beauty´s arch-nemesis, with $8.2 million for the weekend -- and $201.9 million since its release five weeks ago.

"Jersey Boys," Clint Eastwood´s film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical about the 1960s rise to pop success of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, was in sixth place at $7.6 million.

Falling to seventh was Tom Cruise´s latest action movie, "Edge of Tomorrow," in which he stars as a soldier caught in a time loop as he battles aliens. It took in $5.2 million.

In the eighth spot was romantic drama "The Fault in Our Stars," based on a popular young adult novel by John Green about teenagers who meet at a cancer support group. It earned $4.8 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were action blockbuster "X-Men: Days of Future Past" ($3.3 million), and indie feel-good food-truck comedy "Chef" ($1.7 million). (AFP)

China research study for rail link from Kashgar to Gawadar begins

BEIJING: China has reportedly commissioned a "preliminary research study" to construct an international rail link connecting its province Xinjiang’s border to Pakistan.
China has allocated funds for preliminary research on building an international railway connecting Kashgar in Xinjiang with Pakistan's deep-sea Gwadar Port on the Arabian Sea.

"The 1,800-km China-Pakistan railway is planned to also pass through Islamabad and Karachi," Zhang said at the two-day International Seminar on the Silk Road Economic Belt.

"Although the cost of constructing the railway is expected to be high due to the hostile environment and complicated geographic conditions, the study of the project has already started," Zhang added whilst referring to recurring attacks carried out by extremist groups in Pakistan.

Xinjiang itself is in a restive state due to attacks by East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) militants within the province as well as in Beijing and other Chinese cities.

China and Pakistan have already signed a multi-billion-dollar deal to construct an Economic Corridor through AJK connecting Kashgar with Gwadar by improving the existing Karakorum road link, though analysts in China questioned its feasibility in view of present conditions.

According to Chinese officials, the new rail link, which runs through the Pamir Plateau and Karakorum mountains, will be one of the hardest to build. (GNN) (Thenews)
