The best production cars from the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show

Motor show concepts are all well and good for a hit of glitz and glamour, but the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show is also offering some brilliant production car debuts along the way the cars coming in 2014 that you can buy. These vehicles are the cars that could be your next set of wheels real-world cars that are relevant, interesting and will be with us next year.

Nissan X-Trail

Next to Nissan’s Juke and Qashqai models, the current generation X-Trail off-roader is rather bland and boring – not so with the new X-Trail unveiled here at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Nissan has eradicated the set square upright design and replaced it with a sleeker looking crossover – even if it isn’t quite as radical as the Juke. Expect the Japanese firm’s 130hp 1.6 turbodiesel to make up the majority of sales when it comes to market next year.

Skoda Rapid Spaceback

Curiously, the Skoda Rapid Spaceback’s boot is actually 135 litres less spacious than the standard Rapid hatchback. It still doesn’t stop us strangely pining for one though. Skoda’s range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, strong styling (it looks brilliant with the contrasting black roof) and enough practicality to lob a couple of baby buggies in the back makes it the perfect family wagon in our eyes. A range-opening price expected to be under £13,000 ($20,800) is the icing on the cake.

Range Rover Hybrid

The idea of a hybrid Range Rover might sound absurd – after all, how efficient can a luxury two-tonne-plus SUV be? Very, as it turns out. Land Rover claims its Range Hybrid will return 44.1mpg (6.4L/100km) combined and emit just 169g/km CO2. A total of 240hp and 516lb ft means decent performance (0-62mph/0-100kph in 6.9 seconds) and all the luxury you’d expect from the famous British brand is certainly welcome but just one-mile on electric power and a rumoured price tag of £98,000 ($157,000) might take some swallowing.

The Mountain

Watching ? Share your views

This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.
Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.

Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds.

The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

New devices drive global IT spending - survey

WASHINGTON: Global spending on information technology is expected to reach $3.8 trillion in 2014, driven by growth in connected devices ranging from jewelry to refrigerators, researchers said Monday. A report by the research firm Gartner said IT spending is expected to increase 3.6 percent from 2013.

The vast expansion of digital devices affects just about every industry in what is described as the Digital Industrial Economy, according to Gartner researcher Peter Sondergaard.

Sondergaard said this means every company is becoming a technology in an era of the "Internet of Things."

"Digitalization exposes every part of your business and its operations to these forces," he said. "It is how you reach customers and constituents, how you run your physical plant and how you generate revenue or deliver services.

"Enterprises doing this today are setting themselves apart and will collectively lead the new Digital Industrial Economy."

Gartner said that in 2009, there were 2.5 billion connected devices with unique IP addresses to the Internet, most of them cell phones and computers.

In 2020, there will be up to 30 billion devices with unique IP addresses, most of which will be products.

Gartner predicts that the total economic value add for the Internet of Things will be $1.9 trillion dollars in 2020, benefitting a wide range of industries, such as healthcare, retail and transportation.

"Computing power will be cheap and covert. We won't know it is there. It will be in our jewelry and in our clothing," Sondergaard said.

"We will throw more computers into our laundry in a week than we've used in our lifetimes so far."

Gartner said that by 2017, new device categories such as mobile phones, tablets, and ultra-mobile PCs, will represent more than 80 percent of device spending, and that tablets will comprise nearly half of first-time computer purchases. (AFP) (GNN) (Yoogle)
